Take a look at the Freecom 450 harddrive media player. You need something similar to that really. Although I'd not bother with the wireless version, even I struggled to get it working.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

I used a WDTV to watch programme I've recorded on my PC, you simple copy the programmes to a portable harddisk which you connect to the WDTV.

I don't use the wi-fi on mine either, I just use the ethernet port and it works great.
And no you don't need a hard drive in there but they are fairly cheap and easy to fit.0 -
If you're only interested in streaming content from your pc to your tv an old xbox is a very good investment, got mine for a tenner, got a wireless access point to plug in the back for about the same, softmodded the xbox to run xbox media center, voila a cheap media player which will play almost anything, though for people wanting to view high def mkv files or similar this is not really up to that as the xbox processor is not fast enough. I appreciate that it may be a little to techie for the o.p. but try ebay, gumtree etc and you may find one that's already been modded. Google XBMC for more info.0
