This site looks scarily tempting - I shall have to investigate ;):o

Thank you for the link - it looks amazing. I suppose the proof on the discount pudding is in the eating. Has anyone used them?

Someone here posted a couple of months ago that they had tried them and the delivery was quick, well-packed and was all there. I can't remember the username but it wasn't a new poster, they had made plenty of other posts. I haven't tried them myself but they do stock quite a few items also sold by Approved Food. I was put off using them when they first appeared because they seemed to sell a lot of unhealthy food, but they don't seem quite so bad now. Even so, I don't think I would be able to get a full 56kg order together from them, (not enough of what I usually buy) which is what I get from Approved Foods around once a month. Also Approved Foods often had special offers on with postage recently. ;)

I wouldn't personally. Had a quick troll through and if you check the details some of their 'bargains' are more than a year out of date. Try B and M Bargains instead , if you are lucky enough to have one close by - cheaper prices and usually have at least a few months before best by date, much more to choose from plus their prices are cheaper on the few things I know I have bought recently e.g 800g Heinz Tomato -49p with a couple of months before suggested best by date as opposed to this site -60p and already past date

I visited B and M stores when I was in Hamilton- just hit upon them and was quite impressed.
Was also impressed with Home Bargains (visited a store in Coatbridge which used to be Lidl).

No the Heinz tomato soup is best before jul2009 http://www.foodbargains.co.uk/products/NEW_PRICE_Heinz_Cream_of_Tomato_Soup_800_gram_Tin_60p_Per_Tin_BARGAIN-163-1.html. admittedly short, but there are planty of other bargains with lots f sell by. I am not sure why this site is being critised surely competition is a good thing.

Best-before dates and Sell-by dates are not the same thing. You can generally eat food over it's Best-before date without any problems, it is not usually unsafe to eat if the packaging is intact. In the case of tinned food it can be quite a long time over and be safe so long as the tin is not dented/punctured/rusty. The Best-before is just an indication of quality, which may suffer the older a product becomes.
Sell-by/Use-by dates are completely different, they are usually found on fresh foods with a shorter shelf life, you could be poisoned if you eat food over the use-by date, especially dairy, fish, meat or poultry. Obviously with a little common sense it is easy to see/smell if an item might make you ill!
On another thread on this forum a few people have talked about white chocolate with berries, bought from Approved Foods, which is like Foodbargains, they specialise in selling food close to or over the Best-Before dates at rock-bottom prices. Apparently this white chocolate is 4 years over it's Best-before date and is still delicious with no ill effects! :D

Jaytin was that aimed at me or previous poster.

Posted about food bargains because it seems similar to approved adn they have come in for their fair share of slating. I noticed that a lot of food at food bargains is similar to Home Bargains, but not everyone has a Home Bargains near them.

I know the difference between best before and sell by ,don't worry about eating things that are past best before, but will discard dinted cans or rusty etc. Although cans are fine if the dint is not near the seal or edge I will discard dinted cans just in case, however - personal preference.

Posted this link as I hoped it might help someone although seems to be not very popular.

I really appreciated the link. I am not sure if I will buy, I am trying to attempt to have a go at making a lot of things from scratch and the foodbargains and approved food both have a lot of processed food.

I think I will have a think and a look and see. No-one has been on and said that they are not a legit co or that they are tricksy, so it is just a question of working out what is good for you.

Sorry Patchwork it wasn't actually a reply to anyone in particular, more like just some general information to dispel a few myths and put people's minds at ease! It is easy nowadays when being bombarded with dates on everything we eat to be ruled by them, but not all dates are the same, some should definitely be regarded as a warning and others as more of a guideline. :D

Did get sucked in by dates a few years ago and threw out a lot of spices, but after that I researched it a bit more and personally cannot tell any difference on spices etc. past their best befores! (Mind I am not Marco Pierre White - although how a smoker can be a super taster!)
