Audacity sound problem

When transferring form a cassette recorder to Audacity the sound keeps making, (for want of a better description), a rat-a-tat tat noise causing distortion of the sound and making listening back,(and during the recording), nearly impossible.

The recording is speak only, a phone conversation, and plays back perfectly through the cassette recorder, I used Audacity a few weeks ago and did not have this problem, any ideas what it could be and how to fix it?

Am using XP, saving to Realplayer, not that I think that makes any difference!

Thanks.

Have you tried turning the sound of the player down to a lower level.
I take it you are going in from headphone out to mic in ?????
you could try turning mic (input balance) down.
some more info could be useful but hope this helps

    Thanks for the reply.

Most of the input is OK, but it is intermittent sound distortion.

I am using a cassette tape recorder,( used before without probs and this plays back OK in play mode on the cassette), From the "ear" jack on the cassette to the "line in" on the PC. I have "monitor input" clicked on the drop down menu of the "input level meter".

I have turned down the input & output volume down so that it is just audible to hear whilst recording, this has not completely cured it, but it is a lot better and I should be able to use it OK.

    Thanks for your help
