Metric Gas Meter

Hi All,

What a mess i had to ttry to sort out yesterday evening, sent from pillar to post!

To explain the scenario, in november last year we had our gas meter replaced by transco, not by request, they sent us a letter saying it needed to be done. At the time we were with Npower and Quarterly bills were an average of £150 to £200, i would always supply correct meter readings to ensure bills accuracy. Using the Usitch site i moved the supply to British Gas in February, my final bill from Npower was fine. We moved house on May the 1st and supplied all final readings to British Gas, imagin my surprise when the bill I received was for £470!!

Something was clearly wrong, I got my last bill from Npower out, calculated that they were multiplyibg the gas units by 11.23 to get KWH, and British Gas by 31.68! after some reading on sites like this I realised it must be confusion over the type of meter, i.e. British gas thought it was imperial when it was metric. The meter point number on both bills were the same. First call to british gas resulted in them saying it was definately imperial, i then called Npower who said it was definately metric!!! phoned british gas back who said phone transco, phoned transco who said I had to speak to British Gas about meter queries. eventually after 5 seperate phone calls i had to get my ex landlord to go back to the house count the number of black digits and red digits, and also confirm that there was m at the left corner of the reading. we also recorded the serial number of the meter which was diferent to the one on both bills. Called British Gas back, who now say they will look into this further and call back on Friday.

In the end this cost me my entire evening last night trying to sort out, hopefully in the end it would of saved my over £200, but I have to say British gas tried to block my attempts to clear this up on a few occasions, I was left to do the ground work!

My extreme concern now is that if I was not so forcefull with this issue and follow it up relentlessley, i could easily have just paid the £470 and moved on. What happens to elderly people, or people who do not undertsand these frankly confusing bills.. surely there should be more publicity or warnings in place when these meters are changed by Transco.

My advise to everyone, if your bill does not look right after having a meter changed, challenge it. and do not accept the first statement like I got - "Mr Gallagher, I can confirm 100% this meter is an imperial one".

I will update further on friday when hopefully i will have this one resolved.
