I Have Just Left College, And Start At MAnchester Uni In September.

Do You Know If It Will Be Possible For Me To Claim Job Seekers Allowance During The Summer Months? All Workplaces Around HEre Are Not Taking On Summer Staff This Year.

Thanks

I thought about doing this last summer. Technically you aren't a student as you've left college/school but haven't yet registered at university, so you are unemployed.

But I found a job a few days before I was going to claim.

ALL places of work close to you aren't recruiting? They don't have to advertise places, throwing a CV at them can often yield results.

It may be possible to claim, but you shouldn't. It's abusing the system. You’re still a student despite what the technicalities may say.

I am currently desperately seeking a job & have had no luck for a while.

After finishing my exams in 3 weeks, I will need to earn a wage up until I go to university in October.

The news about jobseekers is reassuring (although it's not the best option, it's a final fallback) but I have one question:

My mum is currently receiving child benefits until August (and even with those we can barely cover the bills - and she works) and up until now I have received EMA, which has covered most of what I need.

Will I be able to receive jobseekers IF my mum is receiving child tax credits? (I understand this is a bit of a grey area for some people)
  • No.
If you start claiming benefits for yourself, your mum's will be stopped.
Otherwise, the government is paying for your upkeep twice. Make sure you tell child benefit as soon as you apply for JSA, because if they keep paying you, you'll have a large overpayment to pay back.

technicalities?...no job, looking for a job, seeking work, job seeker = job seekers allowance (income based)...

mind you, perhaps if you jump off a lorry in Dover, don't speak the language, have lost all your documents, will probably contribute nothing in the future to this country, take everything offered on a plate...plus a house and health care you may be more entitled....

apply for jobseekers...either you're entitled or not...technicalities don't come into it...mm...bit like the MPs finances scandal...and those mouthpieces that say "its perfectly legal for them to do it....but its not in the spirit!"....if you're elligible you'll get it...if not you wan't...simple....

alternately, just watch you don't break an ankle jumping off the back of that lorry in Dover...

    good luck:beer:

If you're based in or near Manchester have you applied to work for the MEN Arena? A company call ShowSec International runs the security for most of the major events in Manchester, including the MEN Arena and MCFC, or at least they did a few years ago. They take on plenty of staff over the summer as they're really busy plus it's a good job to have while ur a student - I did it my first time round.

    When was that?
For security work you need to be licensed since recent years. Licensing involves paying to go on a course and getting an SIA certificate.

Wonder does MrsManda mean, ushering type jobs at events and shows as opposed to actual "security" jobs
