What shall I do?

Please can anyone advise me?

I have recently started a new job- 5 weeks ago and its nothing like I imagined it.... I felt like this straight away and my partner said give it a few weeks as its new etc.... but its actually got worse!

Anyway, I have decided to go to Uni in September anyway so in the interim period do I keep working there and hand in my notice in at the beginning of August, albeit feeling miserable at the thought of having to be there for even another week or....well this is the tricky bit:

1. I can't just leave without another job obviously, and a new one is going to take weeks/ months with the whole application process

2. I am currently being 'trained' to be fully competent to do this job and it all seems futile at the moment as I'm not going to be there, plus I feel absolutely awful at the fact that I am going to let them down now!

Going to Uni, has only just come about as I planned to go next september!

I don't know whether to tell my manager and let her know my plans so they can start looking for someone else, but then its obviously pointless in me even being there getting trained for nothing, or just say nothing and hand in my notice in two months?!!

It's really getting me down. I wish I had never left my last job now but that is hindsight I guess!!

I am completely at a  end!!

Thanks

I know how you feel. The last two jobs I've taken I wish I'd never left the last one. I've been in my current job over 5 months now and I still hate it every day, but continue on the basis that I'm lucky to have a job at the moment, and at the moment I'm not in a position to just pack it in.

Anyway. Back to the issue in hand. I think there are a few questions you need to ask yourself. Firstly, if you were to tell them that you will be leaving in September and they were to ask you to leave (bear in mind they don't need an excuse as you've not been there long) would you be able to get by? If not, its not a risk you can afford to take. Only you know how likely they are to do that.

Personally I think I'd keep quiet and carry on working there for now (if you need the money). Just keep thinking of how good it'll be when you walk out the door forr the last time. Work as hard as you can, so that they're loathed to loose you and you can leave with you head held high.
There is no such thing as a free lunch. Its only free because you've paid for it.

Noone can have everything they want and the sooner you learn that the better.

If you're unhappy then leave & temp (if you can) If you can't do that you'll have to sit tight until September. They'll know you knew about uni well in advance of leaving, but you'll be gone. Are your uni wanting a work reference as that could be tricky.

    Hey, thanks for the replies.....

I have already submitted my uni application so that's not a problem!

I don't think I could do that though as I'm being trained, so to leave at the end of the training would probably make me feel worse? As its letting them down more!

I just need to know if I have to work a full months notice, especially as I'm just a 'shadow' for the next two months anyway?!

I think I could get some temp work.....

I did a similar thing, but in my favour was the fact I worked for a local Primary school in their kitchens so I finished for the summer in July anyway.
It was actually my boss who pushed me to go to Uni, she asked me every day if I still wanted to be stuck in the kitchens in 20 years time lol It became a bit of a standing joke between us but I owe her a heck of a lot. She really did give me the courage and push I needed.

Personally, I would be honest with them. The stress of keeping a secret isnt one you need on top of the stress of the rotten job.

First of all are you certain you'll get into university? I know that there are a lot more applications this year because of the economic climate. you don't want to burn any bridges until you know for sure you're going.

Secondly are you sure it isn't teething trouble in the new job? There is always a settling in period and if you haven't moved jobs so much you might not know that. And there is often a period when you wonder why you left your old job where you were comfortable and it's easy to idealise it. Do you have any ways to address the problems with your boss?

but if you are certain on both of these personally I think you should let the company know you don't think it's the job for you and you are planning to go back to uni in September. It's only decent. And it's possible they've been expecting it anyway.

Do let us know how you get on.
