travelling with cats

Hi everyone,

A question for all the cat lovers. Has anyone been away in a touring caravan and taken their cats with them? If so can you please tell me the highs/lows of doing this. My friends think I am a barmpot anorak for wanting to buy a caravan. Am I?

yea i agree, you really can't take cats on holiday, have you ever tried moving house with a cat? the travelling is the biggest stress on them, you will do them more harm than good. plus as soon as you get to your destination they will try and make there way home - it's instinctive. every cat i've had since i was kid has tried to find it's way home once we've moved. you'd have to keep the cats locked up in the caravan and thats not fair.

My barmy brother goes camping with his cat - in a tent! All they do is put it on a really long leash and tie it to a nearby tree so that he has a certain amount of area to play in, but no further. If they want to go somewhere for the day, they find there's always a camper nearby who's happy to watch the cat.

  • You should read this book it's called I and Claudius by Clare De Vries, she travelled round the USA with her Burmese Tom and wrote a book about it.

I know someone that used to take their Burmese on holiday/days out, but I think it was either shut in the caravan or outside in a wire travelling cage. Personally, I know my cats would hate it - they yowl travelling in the car and are very unsettled by anything new in their territory. They definately prefer home comforts and familiarity!

  • For 15 years we sailed around the world with a ships cat called "Pu$$y". The only problem was her catching large cockroaches ashore and trying to bring them back aboard. Calling her back aboard in America was also amusing :D

We also RV'd with a 5th wheel (similar to a caravan), touring the USA for 3 years with a cat that adopted us. Travelling with cats is no problem as long as you're patient. You luv them and they will luv you.

Some cats don't travel well so do check out that your cat will travel ok by taking him/her out for a ride in the car. Definitely keep the cat in a cat carrier in the car.

If you have no patience and are determined to rush everywhere - please don't take a cat. I suggest, if you don't know how to relax and enjoy life; don't even go caravanning

Mind you, as your friends think you're a 'barmpot' you will probably be one of us and all will be ok :rotfl:
