I've also heard that Gorenje fridges come with a 5 year guarantee - they must be pretty confident of their product but don't know much about them apart from this.

Hi, I believe Bosch used to make a retro fridge but no longer do.

Miele definately don't and wouldn't. Miele innovate not copy!

Anyway, good luck with your search.

We've got a Miele fridge (the model number escapes me) and it does look quite retro with the silver handles (a brilliant idea, as it happens - the mechanism pushes against the body of the fridge thus taking the strain off the seal, so in theory no need for seal replacement). Internally it's much better designed than a Smeg - bags of space and a couple of split shelves for tall things. Definitely worth the money.

We bought a Gorenje fridge when we re-did our kitchen (it's an integral, tall fridge, rather than free-standing/retro), after lots and lots of research -it looked like the best value/quality match andd did what we wanted it to do. It's always a gamble going for a make you haven't used before, but so far, so good - we are pleased with the quality and durability, the details and finish are at least as nice as our previous fridge, which was Bosch, and the price was a couple of hundred less than the other marques we looked at. I looked into Smeg fridges, too - the reviews I saw were almost always pretty damning. You could try a question on this board - either the general appliances board or refridgeration

It's run by white goods engineers, and I've always found the advice to be really good

Hi, Yes - Miele are at the forfront of appliance brands and virtually everyone else copies.

Actually you are right about the free standing stainless steel units, they have a bowed front which give them a little bit of that retro feel.

What about going really retro.. and instead of a fridge, get a 1940's meat safe?...

  • I like it! It looks better than all those giant American style fridges which all appear to made out of the same grey plastic that they use for the cheapest CD players.
