Can I claim these charges back?

Our joint account with the Halifax coudn't pay a dd as we were £4 short, due to my forgetfullness due to my 3 year old son being in hospital. Tbh, paying money into the account was the last thing on my mind seeing as my son couldn't breathe!
Anyway, they have now charged us £35 for the unpaid dd.
Is there any way I could claim these charges back, if we end up paying them, or should i try to play on their "human side" and tell them about our son, in the hope that they will wipe the charges?

By all means ask, after all you have nothing to lose. Most banks will let the first transgression go as a gesture of goodwill. If not use your sons illness as an approach for a goodwill gesture. I hope he's better now and good luck.0
