How long does a renting application take

Me and my fiance put an application in on saturday for a house, through the letting agents that i am already renting through. We were honest about my br and that my fiances credit is not good. They said that they would see if they could just do a check on my fiance and would let me know. They said that they would be dealing with the application on Monday.

I phoned them yesterday to see if they had done the credit check on me, and was told that they were waiting to speak to the landlord before they did any checks. Today i phoned them about lunch time to see if they had managd to speak to the landlord and they said they were going to speak to him today and would get back to me today. As i have been at college i didn't know if they had tried to ring me, so just after five i gave them a ring to see. They told me they still hadn't spoke to the landlord and that it would either be tonight or tomorrow morning and they would let me know if i had been successful.

I know that these applications take time, but how long do they take.

When i first ever rented from them, they were very slow with the application. They know that i have to give notice to my landlord on the day the rent is due and that is soon.

The time it takes varies massively between estate agents and their will to work fast. Can be as fast as 48 hours to moving in if all the ducks are in a row or as long as it takes them. Sorry for the vagueness but thats how it seems to work!

Keep phoning them, constantly and annoy them into getting you accepted and moving through the checks etc

Thankyou for your help. I just wish that they would get it sorted out. I am in the middle of my exams too.

Ive been moved in within a week of application - this was due to the fact that it was the same landlord just moved to one of his bigger properties, though we still had to have the deposit returned for the first property, put down a deposit for the new property and sign a new tenancy agreement.

Another time it was 4 weeks from application to moving in. We viewed the house, gave the deposit a week later and were given keys and moving date on that day, 2 weeks later we were in. This one was through an agency, I was on the phone constantly to see what was going on, had landlords been informed, had they contacted our referees, when should we be giving the deposit.

As a PP said, it can vary hugely and some agencies are more on the ball than others, but keep in contact and hopefully they will get things moving for you.

Good luck with the house and your exams xx

They know that i have to give notice to my landlord on the day the rent is due and that is soon.

Actually your notice has to correspond to the date in the month that the fixed term ended, not rent due date. Often these dates are the same, but no always. Dont get caught out!

Thankyou for your help. The date the term ends is the same date as my rent is due.

Had a phone call from the letting agents, who have spoken to the landlord who is happy for them to do the reference checks on us, so they are going to do that. The landlord has said he doesn't want to wait a month for us to move in and would we compromise, we said yes we would. The letting agents said they would sort out this when they got back to us after doing all the checks.

A worry i have is that my fiances credit is not good, which we did tell them and put in on the form. I did say that i had got the garuntor (sp) form filled in, just in case they needed one for me, she said they wouldn't as my fiance earns enough. Keeping fingers crossed that we get this house as we really want it.

I have spoken to the letting agents today to see how the application is going, as i am suppose to put my notice in this weekend for the house i am in now.

They said that they are going to do the credit check and references today and it would be next week when it was sorted. I said what happens if it doesn't go ahead and i have put my notice in, as i am worried about credit check. They said they will ring back today and let me know about the credit check. I thought after they had spoken to the landlord on wednesday, they would have sent the application off to homelet yesterday.

I don't know what to do now if they don't phone me back by 5.00, i spoke to them this morning, just after 11. They told us at the weekend that the credit check takes seconds.

I don't want to give my notice in and then we end up homeless.
