it probably varies between each city
One of my friends lived in one near Euston which he said was very good. I'm going to one in Mile End so I just hope I don't have the same experience as you guys.0 -
my son has just moved into one in liverpool town centre,he loves it.its an old hospital done up into flats with 5 rooms and communal kitchen/diner/lounge and a large main lounge downstairs.he has ensuite shower/toilet/sink.largish room with bed, walk in wardrobe with shelves on top and a huge pole.lovely big built in desk with plenty of shelves, storage etc.£110 a week.all utilities and broadband.contents insurance etc.
the uni accom on campus was £90 and it was like a cell, bed, small table and a chair and shared bathroom with 7 other people.was horrible.wouldnt let a dog live in it.he'll probably get a shared house in his second year but we are happy with where he is at min.staff are excellent, really helpful.no complaints....yet!!Shine on you crazy diamond..............0 -

After a year living at Unite in Manchester I'd recommend never living there. The beds were absolutely awful. It consisted of two pieces of cheap chipboard in the corner of the room, with another thinner piece laid on top for the mattress. Walls were ridiculously thin. Took some of my deposit after leaving the flat in a much better state than it was when I moved in.0

I have lived in The Forge in Sheffield for 2 years now and hopefully living there this coming term. The accommodation in nice but the company is useless. Takes them ages to get stuff fixed and at the end of the year they send a bill will loads of ridiculous charges. They will try and charge you for anything they can. Charged me £156 been trying to contest it but it is very hard to contact them.Come on you Irons0

I worked at Central Quay in Sheffield over the weekend and I can say they certainly try to cut corners and that the quality of the accommodation doesn't fit the price. If you live in one of their properties than you must make sure that you complete the check-list very thoroughly and take pictures of everything that is damaged as proof.0

Watch out!!!!Never go to a UNITE halls of residence!!!!!!
Before applying be sure that you want to stay the full year!!!!!
I have a very bad experience with them, and I want to share what it happens to me so as anyone would suffer the same!
Well, in august, I booked a room in one of the halls of Unite in London for 51 weeks for the academic year 2009/2010 but 5 days after I had to cancel it for personal reasons. Everything happened even before the hall opened its doors to the students.
I have sent them several letters trying to explain the situation, but they don't want to listen to me, they said that I have signed a contract and they claim for the total amount established in the tenancy agreement (almost 10000 pounds) ALTHOUGH I HAVE NEVER LIVED IN THE HALL AND I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHERE IT IS. :exclamati
It is so unfair....!!!!!!:(
I don't know if someone has ever had this problem....but I would appreciate that they could tell me their stories. Actually, I have been threatened with legal actions in the Courts against me.:mad:0 -
i think it's important to separate out the problems with maintenance/security and the issues some people have had after trying to end their contract early. although the 'poor' level of some buildings might be specific to unite in some areas, a company/landlord wanting you to pay for the duration of a signed contract will be pretty much universal. most student lets are for a full year, or at least 9 months.:happyhear0

I've known people who've lived at the ones in Sheffield and i've heard enough horror stories  to make sure i never lived in one. It's a rip off compared to private rents anyway. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

stayed at a unite halls in Manchester which has since been pulled down. The place was a dump, my mail was regularly binned or stolen from the so called secure post boxes, I had no working shower or hot water and they were trying to charge me £90 a week (large room cost) when I was in a box room that should have been £60. Staff were rude, liars and of no help. Fortunately their incompetence also extended to giving me a contract. So as I had signed nothing I moved out after a few weeks and left the key in the door. They still tried to get the rent for the whole year from me. My uni advice centre wrote them a very snotty letter for me telling them to do one. Never heard from them again. Avoid unite at all costs.0
