But the o/p knew exactly what they wanted before they went

Lets be honest, very few wake up and think 'i MUST HAVE a laptop TODAY', so why not check around and buy online?

The machine is available from amazon for less, and available with next day delivery. Why would anyone suffer the inconvenience of dealing with PC World or the hassle of going there when the unit can be delivered to your door for less?

    because people dont know better

    bigger isnt always better

but this is usually the consumers instinct

the bigger the brand the better the service

even though it is far from the case
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

Or did they? They knew they wanted a laptop but not which one / specs. They only decided on this one once they saw it and was simply the one they liked most out of the selection available

LOL I am that person, only I will spend the WHOLE day on it. :)

As others have mentioned the key here is research, I work in IT and dont see any issue in buying from PCWorld. I simply see PCWorld, Curries etc as the first port of call to see what they have available if there is anything there I like. I will then take it home google it find out the price from other companies, similar spec'd laptops, read reviews and then and only then if the price is right purchase from a high street store. (happy to spend at most £10-20 more to collect there and then!) Also note the same stored web prices as it may be cheaper to reserve and collect (and in fact have done that instore using their internet connection!) :)

As pgilc1 has pointed out this particular model is cheaper elsewhere and a quick search and more patience would have paid off in this case

    sometimes next day

    and the protection of DSR?

its a no brainer for me, buy online (still reputable places that doesnt include dsgi)

turns out the 700 and 702 are identical
They're the same machine. Hilariously, the Compaq Mini 700 series comprises just two models here in the UK, one of which you'll probably never see in the likes of PC World anyway.

That's sales assistants for you, you know why? Commission anyway I think you should def phone them back up.
PC World staff aren't on commission (or at least not anything that miselling a different model laptop would benefit them by).

Most likely the 700 vs 702 is a DSGi specific model to quash pricematches - another example is the Samsung UE40B7000 vs UE40B7020 - one has a silver rim and one doesn't, but they are different so you won't be able to pricematch, plus the UE40B7000 is also exclusive to DSGi...

EDIT - Never really seen the attraction of the Compaq Mini 70x and the HP Mini-note 2133 - for the price the Advent 4211C (MSI Wind u100 rebrand) would be better imo.
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

I dont necessary think buying in store is better by any means. Like I say I generally use the high street stores simply for scoping out what is on offer, granted this is not the full selection but for the likes of a laptop purchase I want to physically see what it looks like even before I waste time researching into it. Once I have found one I am happy with I will do my research if this turns out to be priced competively from the said store then I am happy to pay the extra £10 (for example) if it means I can physically have it in 15mins! that is simply a price I am willing to pay. I dont favour the "bigger brands" but if they meet the price I am willing to pay for the same goods I would otherwise order on the internet then I'm happy :)

No issue with buying from PCW if the price is right and you know what you want.
The problem that usually arises on this forum is that people use PCW as their only option, and buy based on what takes their fancy, or what spotty kid happens to recommend that day.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I know nothing about them so I went to PC World

The moment I got to this sentence...I just knew....

For all the people reading this now, if you are ever thinking of getting a PC/Laptop/Notebook/Mobile Phone please do NOT goto PC World.

Just because they have "PC" in the name of their company, doesnt' mean they know ANYTHING about them. They also overcharge people and the quality of their own branded hardware is abysmal.

I feel sorry for the OP, I would definatley visit the store and go back and kick up a storm. I am sure it will get you a full refund and anything else you want with it. Failing that - trading standards.

That's shocking. It infuriates me that PC World get away with the way they treat customers and the prices they charge. I would beg anyone to steer well clear of PC World. Certainly don't go there for help or advice - it could be a very costly mistake. If you want help or advice or a recommendation of a GOOD place to spend money on PC products then post here and someone will help. This doesn't just count for PCs or printers or monitors but even cables and accessories. I once saw a PC World own brand budget USB cable for sale (it was even sold as a budget cable, not a fancy one) with a price ticket of £14.99. Real value was probably less than £1 and that's not in some obscure shop but in some fairly mainstream retailers. I've started my own computer and web company in my area which I run part time over and above my main job - the main motivation (besides making extra cash for a house deposit) was after seeing the Tech Guys price list in PC World one day. Absolutely ludicrous.

Save yourself hassle and cash. Avoid. Hope you get it sorted.
