No Vista CD with new laptop?

I've just received a refurbished (like new) laptop from Currys.

It has the full 12 months warranty etc and is like new.

When advertised, it stated it would come with Vista.

But there is no cd in the box at all. Not even a Toshiba recovery one.

I'm not being stupid here, it is supposed to come with the Vista cd right?

Any tips on how to proceed from here? I haven't contacted Currys yet because I suspect they will ask me to send it back but I really like this laptop. I haven't seen it on sale anywhere else.

Ideally I would like them to send me the CD pronto.

Anyone had any experience with refurbs from either Currys, PC World or Dixons?

Have you been prompted at all to make a set of recovery discs yourself?

Your computer probably has a recovery partition on the hard drive with all the necessary files to install Vista on it.

Seems like a stupid arrangement to me, but it does help the manufacturer save 5p, so it's all for a good cause.

    Unlikely.

Is there a restore partition, or a program to make your own restore discs?

Hardly any computer maker issues a Windows CD these days, not just Toshiba.

    hi there

what happens when you power it up?

was working on a Toshiba Satellite the other day and it had a recovery partition. thing is if restoring from the recovery partition, it totally wipes the c: drive.

this might be useful to some people or scenarios but what if you updated to SP2 and had to restore. you are reverted back to sp1 or what the recovery partition is and have to reinstall everything like updates / programs / data etc whether you like it or not.

so an image backup of these types is essential

what ever happened to "non-destructive" recoveries like HP / Compaq

    regards

So it's normal for the CD not to be supplied these days?

What about if I need the licence key?

I need to go home and investigate (laptop only came today, I haven't seen it yet but there is definately no cd).

I will be back to ask about how to create a recovery disk. You have been warned!

The license key should be on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop.

I always get media from Dell and other companies I've used, I insist - ask when you order, even if there is a £5 fee, it's worth it for a hassle free reinstall if anything goes dead (especially the HD) at a later stage.

(On Dell's site there is usually a media and media-less version of the OS listed on many offers/configs.)

The Same thing happened to me, I don't have a CD with Vista.

    Thanks for all the replies.

As I've never purchased a computer/laptop before, I assumed the cd comes with it so I panicked.

When I turned it on, I did get a warning screen that said I must create a recovery disc.

Licence key is on sticker on bottom. (Phew!)

So, all a bit of a melodrama on my part!
