surely if you kill one via a trap and leave it there, the others will get the message?

    Nope. Doesn't work like that.

Firstly the body will likely be mucked around with/half eaten by another predator or domestic animal.

Secondly the body will eventually decompose.

So there will be no body there to scare them off.

Finally you may be rid of that/those pesky squirrels for a year or 2, but once a young one sees a free territory it will move in, breed and cause more damage.

That's why it's better to teach the ones you got to avoid your garden. They won't move out but they will work out that your plants/garden is only worth travelling through to someone else's garden/dustbin to eat from.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

    mmmm.

If you see the rubbish that squirrels eat you won't want to eat one.

feed them. i hate the blighters, but where we are, backing onto a massive forest we have no chance. what we have noticed is we only have 3 that visit us, if we culled them they would get replaced. so we feed them, along with the birds. they now know where to go for food and leave our veggies and bulbs alone.
we did lose one , the ginger cat was so proud with one in his mouth tripping over its tail as he pranced around proudly displaying his kill.

We had the same problem for a couple of years, the grandchildren loved them, until they started to dig up the garden and beheading my roses etc., so I let the dog out, and we have not seem then since:rotfl:

How do you explain to the squirels which is their food and which is for the birds? As my huge squirrels steal all my fat balls and run off with them and sit in the trees laughing at me!!

I love our squirrels, we've got a cheeky little fella who'll sit on the doorledge looking in to see if I'm about :D they have a water bowl and I feed them walnuts and peanuts. Keep me and the kids amused anyway seeing as our bunny died and I realistically can't afford a pet now incase of vets bills etc.

I found out by accident how to stop them coming over, put food out for them ie bird food, walnuts etc, and then just stop. I ran out of food and money to buy more and they didn't come back for weeks. They came back once I topped up the food though. They might start to see your garden as a food source for nuts/seed rather than the plants, and when that's gone they might leave well alone altogether.

Please don't kill them though, every creature has it's place and all that ;)

I shoot the squirrels in my garden - they do seem to be territorial, so it takes a while for new ones to move in. I've never got around to eating one though - they are so small that it doesn't seem worth while skinning them - but there are plenty of recipies available...
