Building over an air brick

Hello you helpful people!
My latest project at home is to complete our patio with a set of steps leading from the french windows.
This would not be a problem except for the fact that the brickwork and slab (single step height) would cover 3/4 of an air brick.
My OH says that we can't cover it up as it will cause damp inside the house - but me being me want to find out if it could be done without any detrimental effect to the house.
Any ideas on how to overcome this problem?
Many thanks
