Proper hives are not a threat even in residential areas. Beekeepers are careful to make sure that the Queen bee is selected from a type of bee that is known be docile.

Yes but the OP,s nextdoor neighbour is not a beekeeper.I dont think she doesnt know what sort of bees she lives next door to,maybe try to identify them first then.

    Hi

The problem being, is im petrified of them (it sounds stupid, but its true), I always have been, its awful really, I have tried not to be but I just cant help myself, its anything really, bees, wasps, spiders, flies, moths, ladybirds, even butterflies creep the hell out of me. I really do feel pathetic sometimes, I even shut myself at the bottom of the stairs the other day because there was a wasps in my kitchen, it was ruddy huge I tell you.

We only have a little garden as it is and its getting to the point where I cant actually sit in the garden because there are that many of them, any suggestions would be great, as long as its not telling me to buy a bee keepers suit :D.

    Thanks

    Hi Wkdwll,

I know EXACTLY what you are going through as i have had a complete insect phobia for over 20 years now (Yes including ALL the things you listed plus daddy longlegs, ants, anything smaller than a mouse really).

My eldest kid is 17 and she never got to play out in the garden with me. It affected my life in MANY ways other than the kids..... In summer i couldn't have windows open..... I would be locked out the house if a spider was on the door - that usually ended with me getting an amused neighbour to help.... I couldn't sell Avon as i couldn't go to doors where there were bushes or flowers..... holidays abroad were hell, i wouldn't leave the room at night for fear of mosquito's - and again, no windows or doors to be open...... I would shake for hours if a spider was seen in the bedroom or bathroom - even after the hubby had got rid of it...If he didn't get it i couldn't go in the room for days ! I would hear a lawn mower or a plane and run thinking it was a wasp.... i never went in beer gardens or friends gardens...I never sat with my parents in they're bEAUTIFUL garden.....I spent 20 years AVOIDING any situation that would bring me in contact with insects and freaked if they were around anyway..... It goes on and on - i won't keep boring you !!:o

I tried the GP he sent me for therapy.. The guy drew a spider and said "can you touch the paper?" I said "Yes, it's not a real b****y spider!" Next visit he put a money spider in a urine bottle and said "take it home and look at it often".....the next week he put a large spider in an open bucket...... I LEFT !! Waste of time!!!

You are NOT pathetic, it is a genuine frightening feeling that you have NO control over and unless you suffer from a phobia you have NO way of understanding just how bad it is for the sufferer (and they're family!!).:o

That all said............ :j :j :j I've sorted mine myself after all these years! This year i decided (completely out of character for someone who HATES gardens) i wanted to grow my own fruit and veg as my 22 month old girl (Megan) loves fruit and veg - and costs us a FORTUNE! :D Hubby pointed out the problem that caused with my phobia but i went out and bought everything i needed anyway.
When i went out to plant my seeds i listened to my ipod so i couldn't hear the wasps and bees. Being in a close proximity to spiders and ants meant i desensitised myself to my fear, i could brush an ant off me without running round shaking and squealing! I still don't LIKE any insects but now i can COPE with them. Don't get me wrong, it's not easy and i'm sure i'll never be 100% over it, but you CAN learn to live with them. We have masonry bees in our outside wall, but today i have been in the garden with Megan while she played with her toys. I sat and if i saw one or it's shadow i sat still and put my fingers in my ears!! :o My reward is seeing my potatoes, cucs, toms, sweetcorn and carrots thriving - and also knowing that Megan will get all the fresh air the eldest one didn't !!

PLEASE give it a go - i am certain that the answer is putting yourself closer to them... the more i hid the bigger my phobia grew, and i was the worst person i knew for that phobia. Stand at the window when they are there and look at them. Do that for a couple of weeks. Then go out with music on so you are near them but can't hear them. I am not a fan of bees, but i do understand the risk of us wiping them out and the whole concept of "we have 4 years left if they are eradicated". Knowing all that, i can't kill them, i can't run from them - so i may as well live with them!

I hope that offers some advice and comfort from someone who truly understands.

    Good luck.

If you are scared of insects why did you move to a home with a garden? You could move to a city centre flat (although cockroaches and silverfish..) Let your partner and child enjoy their garden.

It is incredible the number of people who want to destroy things. Church bells, pubs, farms, trees - if you don't like churches, don't buy a house near one; if you don't like pubs or music, don't buy a flat above one; if you don't like the smell of manure, don't live by a farm; if you don't like electric lighting, don't buy a house near trees.

If you don't like insects, then you can't enjoy gardens. Don't destroy a garden just because you are unable to address your phobia.

    i don't get it!

Very well done MM on your change from victim, to victim adviser.

I'm concreting in a section of old footings etc and found this tiny hole in the floor that has a constant stream of little black, red bottomed bees coming in and out. I put my chair in front of that area and sit and watch them, they come all around me, bumbling round, always seemingly forgetting where the hole in the ground is, having to search the area till they find it again, very amusing to watch.
I left that section and will concrete over it when they have finished nesting.

I've really started to see all the different types of bees this year and I seem to have so many. I've got nesting sites everywhere in the garden.

There's a good page about solitary bees here:

and it has a link to a page about bumble bees too.
