Please can someone help me - we have a standard 3 bed semi and pay £220 per month for the gas and electric. This seems far too high. We even use energy saving light bulbs but I feel the amount we pay could be lighting the street lamps outside! We pay by direct debit and then at the end of the year were told that we still aren't paying enough and owe an extra £600! we are with Atlantic gas and electric and we need to find someone who is a lot cheaper and how do we know if we have been paying too much, which I feel we have?

You need to post your actual tariffs.
£220 is a massive amount for your type of property. I have a 3 bed detached and pay £100 a month for both.0 -
What is you annual kwh usage for both fuels?0

It is very high but, as vestra says, you need to look at how many kwh you are using. Look back over old statements and try to find two actual (A) readings a year apart for gas and electricity.
Lights use a fair bit of electricity in a house like ours - six of us spread out over the house, lights on all evening, or if you have a lot of spotlights. But the meter spinners are heating - central heating, fires, water heating, cookers, tumble driers, dishwashers, electric showers etc.
This is a good time of year to work out your average daily use - read daily for a week or two and look for patterns.0
