Can I Recalim Bank Charges on a Closed Account

Hi
Does anyone know if you can reclaim bank charges on a closed account.
When I dropped out of Uni I told Abbey that I was no longer a student. They demanded that I repay the £1200 overdraft within 4 months. As a single parent, and not working, I could not do that so they took me through to debt collection, immediately! I repaid the debt within a couple of weeks, as I sold my flat to pay off my debts, but it was too late it had already affected my credit file.
The majority of my £1200 overdraft was due to bank charges. I was getting in the region of £150 worth of charges a month. Abbey really handled the whole situation extremely badly. I've hated the bank ever since but have been stuck with them as I can't get another bank account due to my poor credit rating.
I kept all the paperwork and bank statements for that account as I always intended to appeal and write to the banking ombudsmen. It was the worst time of my life, I was extremely depressed so never found the strength to take them on.
Now I am more positive I would like to take action and would like to claim back all my charges as they are the main reason I was in debt.
So I was hoping that someone my be able to advise me if I can reclaim charges on a closed account or if there is any other action I can take against them.
