Carpet Right and Carpet Questions?

Hi Guys,

I saw in the morning paper that Carpet right are advertising 50%, with a further 25% off and then an additional 10% off on Thursday.

Has anyone been to carpetright laterly, did you get a good deal or are these deals a con really?

Also, as this is my first carpet buying experience can anyone tell me what kind of carpet is best to get? I never knew there was so many types. I really want a very soft one for the stairs, landing and bedroom, but also have a very mucky little dog!

Thanks
V

I think you probably pay the normal going rate by the time they have taken off all their percentages but I found them okay recently when buying vinyl that I needed to order.

they have a permanet sale on..say's it all really, they were ok pricewise but if you get them to deliver, they do state if you dont use them to lay your carpet aswell they dont have to put the carpet in the room you want it... 2 huge men delivered it...but a 7stone woman had to lug it up the stairs.
Go for something with a fleck in rather than block colour as it hides the dirt better espec on stairs

From speaking to my brother in law who is a floorlayer (albeit vinyl, not carpet), I believe their prices for carpet are actually fairly cheap during the (perpetual) sales, but they then make up for it by charging through the roof on door bar, gripper and underlay.
If you can source these yourself separately you may be on to a winner.

I've also read somewhere that the fitters are not directly employed by Carpet Right, aren't paid very well at all and they and Carpet Right may tend to each blame the other in the event of a problem.

We used them for a stairs+landing and were fairly happy with the carpet - which was from one of the more expensive ranges - but less happy with the fitting, although the chap did have the decency to come back and sort out most of the issues.

I'm a big fan of carpet right :D

Always check their prices ( as already stated , include all the extra's)

Yes , their fitters are self employed, you pay them cash at the end of the job.
One told me , he was contracted by Carpet Right and also John Lewis.
Did the same work to the same standard , for the same money, but JL invoiced the customer for a greater sum.

Also if you have the cash ( waiting ) get any faults fixed before parting with the money!!

Looking around my house .... Kitchen/bathroom/ensuite vinyl,

Hall and stairs carpet and two bedrooms .

So I must recommend carpet right :D

Hi, Have you tried a local independent carpet company? you know a nice family run business - that sort of thing. It would be worth getting 2 or 3 quotes. Its just I feel that these nationals employ sales people not time served industry specialists.

    Good luck.

When I bought my new house years ago I carpeted it completely with aa cheap carpet from Carpet right, and to be honest is has been fine!

The Key is to just buy the carpet from them.

Underlay they wanted £500 for, I got better for £120.
Gripper Bars they wanted £250, I bought a box big enough to do two houses for £30
Door Bars they wanted £100, I got them for £20
Fitting they wanted £700, I got it fitted for £200

Another fan of carpet right here!

We have just recently had our stairs and landing re-carpeted and went for a darkish colour that has a very short pile. Well I say pile.....it hasn't really got a pile that stands up its more like the fibres have been twisted and laid flat.....if that makes sense?

In high traffic areas such as stairs, landing, lounge and master bedroom we would go for flat pile everytime because in time the pile will get crushed and if its a long pile or soft carpet it will be noticable very quickly.

The pile will not crush as rapidly if the tufts of the carpet are close together, and you have been supplied with a suitable underlay for your requirements. This would be down to the salesman offering the correct advice, rather than steering the customer onto the products which offer him the most commission.

I am guessing a flat-pile is a loop piled carpet. these will also flatten over time. Again, the density of the tufts and the quality of underlay used are the factor which determine whether it will crush rapidly. Because a loop piled carpet does not have a pile direction, it will not suffer from shading (when the carpet looks different colours from different angles, and also when it is vaccuumed).

The multiple carpet outlets charge THROUGH THE ROOF for the accessories to your carpet (underlay, grippers, door plates, delivery etc). In my opinion, you would be better off purchasing these yourself, than buying from them. Again, they will usually attempt to sell you the ones which have the greater commission level next to them, rather than what is appropriate for your needs.

I agree with buying your carpets from an independent retailer: Because they are independent, you will be dealing direct with the proprietor, rather than a jumped-up young employee who thinks he is the slickest salesman in the west, chasing his commission target.

I also agree with the 'constantly-on-sale' factor...these are simply false discounts. To get around the legalities they simply DOUBLE the price of the products at a certain percentage of their outlets for a minimum of 28 days. After this period, they are then perfectly allowed to sell the product at '50% off', when the price has not actually changed for the majority of stores.

    eg: 'Buckingham Twist' is £20 per square metre;
    They will sell Buckingham Twist for £40 per square metre at a few of their less profitable outlets for 4 weeks;
After this 4 weeks, they can now advertise Buckingham Twist in all of their stores as '50% off, now £20 per square metre'........but it was £20 to start with??!? There are no real savings here.
