Hi everyone
Getting abit worried as my Laptop makes a strange noise, its like a purring noise. When I close out of Firefox this stops after a while then starts up again.
Any ideas what it could be?

Maybe it's the fan?

Is the laptop feeling perticilarly warm ?
This happened with my old one and it turned out the system fan was on its way outLaptop: Asus X58L; 2Ghz Celeron M575; 1Gb RAM; Intel X3100 Graphic chip set; 120Gb Hitatchi HTS542512K; 15.4" Widescreen. Vista Home Basic

System fan on its way out or too much dust in the fan, try to blow into the vents first of all or some air duster.0

Yeah it's defo the fan, the reason it stop's when you close Firefox is that the CPU fan speed depends on CPU temperature and that in turn depends on what programs your running.
I have literally just had my own laptop apart to clean and regreese (NOT WD40) the CPU fan as it was getting right on my nerves!!
Quiet as a mouse now and just ran my little DOS script to run the CPU as hard as posisble, it's running nearly 10 degree's cooler

Thanks everyone. No the laptop doesn't feel warm and I've tried to blow into the vents, as for taking it apart I wouldnt know where to start

You can't do it by blowing, get a can of compressed air and squirt some of that in through the vents to shift the dust.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Aside from taking it apart and replacing or regreasing the fan, your unlikely to find a long term solution.
It's certainly not uncommon, especially with all the cheap china built laptops about these days.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

only the fan MAY be on it's way out, clean it up and see what it's like then.........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
