Has it been properly established what their pay is yet? Midlands bin-men were on a £22K basic back in 2005. The bin lorry drivers on basic of £27K

The original post wasn't really about the relative pay of bin collector vs other jobs, it was that it was unrealistic to demand a 5% pay rise when all around people are losing jobs and taking pay cuts.Happy chappy0

but how much they earn, is the reason why they want a decent payrise. They obviously think they are underpaid for the work they do, so informing people of the income for a refuse collector, will have some bearing on the public view of their grievances
Its all well and good to say someone doesnt deserve a 5% payrise if they are earning in the £100ks, but when someone is asking for a 5% payrise, and they earn £11k, then i think most people are more sympathetic towards the cause
The only people taking paycuts, are people in jobs that are paid well above min wage, as they have income that can be deducted from. Whether those paycuts are necessary, or just employers quoting 'hard times' so they can cut overheads/increase profits is a whole other debate
People losing jobs, should not mean other people arent entitled to a payrise. The 5% quoted can only be deemed excessive, if we know when they last had payrises, what they amounted to, and whether really the pay they get is credible in relation to the work done. Whos to say anyone made redundant, wasnt paid excessively in their previous years employment. If binmen are so overpaid (seems to be the consensus), then what should their pay be, as at present is isnt much above min wage?
Most supermarket staff are paid £6/hr, they do not have to do messy work, heavy lifting, or walk miles in bad weather, yet, i would class shopwork, as being less demanding, than that of a binman, but is paid at a higher rate, and no-one seems to belittle their work/pay demands, or say they are overpaid for what they do

PS According to my poll, 30% of people either would never be a bin man or would only be one if their dole was going to be stopped or they were completely broke.0
