The "refuse collection operatives" (non gender assumptive phrase), ok, bin men, have been striking in Bristol because they've only been promised a 2 and bit percent pay rise this year.
Maybe they should take a look at the many people who have either lost their jobs or taken a pay cut (we've taken a 20% cut where I work until things pick up).

I haven't had a pay rise for over 2 years, & now certain large companies I work for are mumbling about a pay cut  but I'm just glad to have a job at the moment! Don't think I'd have the balls to think about striking over it....& as for some happy ending I'd rather stay single & thin

Our refuse collectors deserve a bit more than a !!!!!! 2% increase in their salary, it's hardly a well paid job as it is.
Didums to the people taking pay cuts, if you are mug enough to agree to that crap then you deserve everything you get.0 -
If you say it's diddums to the mugs accepting a pay cut then the same argument applies to the refuse collectors. Diddums to them for taking a job that isn't well paid.Happy chappy0

yeah those binmen deserve more than 2%. so do the soldiers, police, firemen, nurses, teachers, and so on.
oh look, now the whole country is bankrupt...
p.s. i thought being a bin man was actually relatively well paid for the hours they do compared to other unskilled jobs - suppose it varies from council to council.0 -

If they are not happy with their pay, with millions of jobs being lost in the wider economy, then they won't mind quitting and allowing someone who will be grateful for the pay have the job.0 -
Daily Mail readers get everywhere don't they, and they are the first to complain when their bins aren't emptied.
Give the Binmen a decent pay rise, I'm always happy for them to clear the rubbish I through away, and can they dump the right wing daily mail readers in the pit at the same time where they belong.0 -

what is the logic for giving binmen a decent payrise just because they want it. all public sector workers (and private sector workers for that matter) think they deserve more money. great - give them all a bigger payrise. despite the obvious that this will just cause inflation and make the payrises inconsequential in the context of the cost of living, who will actually pay for all of this?
jack up taxes even further, or just borrow some more money?0 -

Ultimately, payrates are decided by supply and demand.
In current economic climate there would be plenty of people more than happy to do a binperson's job for their existing rate of pay. There is allegedly deflation in the economy so I don't see how any payrise (for what ???) can be justified.0 -
I don'tknow about Bristol employment generally, but I understand that BBC are moving a lot from Bristol to Wales, and they are a reasonable sized employer in Bristol, and I know the law firms have been hard hit. If this is the smae in other areas of employment in Bristol more and more people will be buying less to create less rubbish, and have time to take it to a tip themsleves!
I think it must be a bit of a depressing job, and an incredibly necessary one. But its unskilled and the workers are fairly easily replacable I imagine. Its a ridiculous time to strike over lack of pay rise and suggests that the workers are not fully aware of the climate we are in.0 -
The trouble isn't so much with bin men getting a pay rise - they do a job I'd hestitate to do, they don't earn a lot of money for doing it and they get sneered at a lot by the wider public.
The problem is with the total size of the public sector. If it was smaller then perhaps we could pay our bin men (and other providers of vital services) better.0
