TalkTalk - Slow Internet Speeds

I have a computer upstairs in my room with a wireless network adapter which draws a signal from my dads computer downstairs.
We have been experiencing problems accessing the internet but cannot find out what is causing this. We have altered things around so that the router and computer are plugged into the master socket (although we do not have a test socket). We have wired it up so that only the one telephone is wired in and then we have a microfilter on this line connecting in the computer and the main telephone.
Whilst things are better, we are still getting varied download speeds and I'm not sure that everything is ok. If we had a dodgy router would be fail to get the internet at all? These are the readings from running download tests (on the desktop):
11/5/2009 – d/load 536 upload 382
12/5/2009 – d/load 472 upload 260
13/5/2009 – d/load 2144 upload 524
27/5/2009 - d/load 184 upload 417
31/5/2009 - d/load 1224 upload 562
1/6/2009 d/load 392 upload 259
1/6/2009 d/load 872 upload 538
1/6/2009 d/load 560 upload 472
Does this look right? Any ideas?
Also I have a Desktop and a Netbook upstairs. The speed from the wireless adapter in the netbook is always faster than the desktop. I have two wireless cards/adapters from the desktop - is this a problem?
These are the details from the device manager:
Desktop - Network Adapters:
Linksys Dual-Band Wireless A+G PCI Adapter
NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller (there is a red cross on this???)
Realtek RTL8187B Wireless 802.11g 54Mbps USB 2.0 Network Adapter
Netbook - Network Adapters:
Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter
Bluetooth LAN Access Server Driver
Generic Marvell Yukon 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller
Is there anything in this - any need for a new/different/better network adapter in the desktop?

Log in to your router and check the sync speeds with the exchange. Internet speed tests are generally meaningless for diagnosing issues without being coupled with those. On the face of it, they do seem to be very low, and very varied though.
Where is your BT Master Socket? How is the router connected to it (directly using router-supplied cable, via a long extension cable, etc.)?Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

Talk talk rolled out their internet/phone package some years ago now and at the time everyone was flocking to it, my parents wanted me to change to talk talk as well..... But I knew, I was 100% confident that talk talk would eventually be over subscribed and that the DL/UL speeds would suffer for it.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
