Advice for new broadband user

I recently bought a Samson laptop and set up wireless broadband with o2. However since then I have found out that you can change the password and security settings on the router in internet explorer, and that it is better if you connect with an ethernet cable before you do this. So I connected the ethernet cable to my laptop and the other end to the o2 wireless box, but the ethernet light on the o2 box was still not showing. So I was wondering if I should have altered a setting on the laptop before connecting the ethernet cable. I would be very obliged for any help.

If you plug the lappy into the router with the cable,can you browse the internet (with wirless off on the lappy)? If so,its connected ok.0
