Advice on concert please

My two sons who are 14 and 11 really like a band that's fairly popular at the moment, so when I heard the band were playing at a fairly near university I checked with their website to see if there were any age restrictions and it said you had to be 14 or over or with an adult. I booked the tickets over the phone I asked about age restrictions and he said the same and pointed out that they would not be allowed in the bar. Fair enough. So I booked 4 tickets for my husband, me and my 2 sons (we really like the band as well). We were really looking forward to going in May, but now I have read on their fan website that it can get pretty rough at their gigs. I expected that at the front and we were going to stay well away but now I don't know if we are doing the right thing. Obviously they will have security people there ,so if there is any trouble they should sort it out.I am not worried about the older one as he's much taller than me but the 11 year old is a bit small for his age 4'8". What are your opinions. It would be a real shame not to go as they are really looking forward to it.

As long as you stay within your own group and no one gets left on their own and you stay well away from the bar and the group of people bashing around near the front of the stage (mosh pit) you should be OK. What group are you going to see?

As a heavy metal/punk fan with a 6 year old DD i agree with Black Saturn

Fights are very rare at these kinds of concerts. It can get rough at the front but this is moshing not fighting

Also, don't forget ear plugs for all concerned-it will be LOUD !

  • Thanks for your replies. My husband and I have been to loads of gigs.I was 14 when I went to my first gig, Alice Cooper welcome to my nightmare tour. We have taken the boys to open air gigs before, but never to an inside gig and I was wondering if it would be worse because it was at a uni. and inside. Is it usual to see people of their age at uni gigs ?

Hi. I took my brother to see the Kaiser Chiefs for his 13th Birthday. It was not at a Uni but Birmingham Academy. The tickets like yours said under 114s had to be accompanies by an adult. I must say there were no other people his age there at all and as a result he got so much attention with various people lifting him up on to their shoulders so he could see and telling him how cool he was haha.

I think you will be fine. We stayed fairly near the back - set up a meeting point in case we got separated (we did!) and even though we weren't in the thick of things could see really well and we both had a great time and I cemented my reputation as 'the world coolest big sis'

Second the reccomendation to take ear plugs. Set up a meeting point just in case. And take a shoulder bag to shove everyones coats into.

I'm taking my 13 year old sister to Give It A Name next month, and I think it will be ok :) We recently went to see the Darkness with my mum, and we all mnaged to stick together (though I think GIAN will be a lot more hectic!!) Just make sure you have visual contact at all times, especially around the entrances and food areas where it's busiest. Keep the out of the pit and they shouldn't get bruised too much!

my sixteen year old sister and my mum went to see the ordinary boys on friday and my sister got knocked around and kicked ending up with two black eyes HOWEVER they did ignore all my advice of staying towards the back and most importantly together so i think as long as your careful adn stay observant of what is going on around you you should be fine and have lots of fun :D

I was 11 when I went to my first gig. I got on the front row and stayed put. It was so squashed I was actually quite safe there. Have been going to festivals since I was thirteen and have only one moment of being scared in all that time.

These days, as I approach 30, I still go to two gigs or so a week but I'm quite comfortable staying at the back where depending on the venue you generally have room to move around and won't get bashed around too much. In my experience, the worst part of any gig is the crush to get out at the end. So these days we stay at the back, finish our pints slowly and amble our way out when everyone's gone.
