Builders Merchant : Best quote?

Hi all
I recently had planning permission granted for a kitchen extension to my house. The area is 8mX5m.
I have taken my plans to a few builders merchants and got a few quotes.
However since my plans were passed by the council I have had letters from all my local builders merchants offering their services and promising "the best price".
Anyone know the best way to play this to get the best deal?
Do I go in with my plans to each one and say "give me your best price"?
Or do I take in my lowest price to each merchant and say "beat it!". And then do it all again?
Anyone know how they work? Do they have sales targets to hit by thr end of the month like car dealers? Anyone work for them and can offer "inside advice"?
