How much to fit a fireplace?

Options
We currenlty have the old British Gas style on the wall gas fire in the chimney breast, and want to replace it with a proper gas fire with fireplace etc. We have the chimney etc, and the gas supply already but would need the old fire taking out, hole bashing in the chimney breast and the new fireplace putting in and making good.

Any idea how much this would cost? We saw in our local fireplace shop that this was £295, but not sure if this price only counts if you buy from them, or if this is a good price even!
Thanks

  • We were looking at a new fire a couple of years ago. The fire was reasonable, it was the buidling work and installation that would cost.

The company could not give us an exact price as it depended on what the found when the looked inside the chimney, but the cost was around £2,000.

We would not agree and over the next few months the price kept dropping. I think it came down to around £1,000 in the end. But the OH still said no.

Worth bearing in mind not to accept the first quote.

We recently had a sealed unit hole in the wall style gas fire fitted, this required removal of the old fireplace and various bits of the flue, a lintel had to be fitted to support the wall and the new fireplace. Because it is a sealed unit a couple of tubes were fitted up and down the flue, plus the cowl at the top was replaced. All in all I think it cost us around £3k (including the new fireplace).

I suspect until you have chosen a fireplace and the fitter has had a look at what is currently in place then quotes are going to be fairly random.

Best bet is get a couple of companies to quote and detail what work is required, then go from there. You can always post the details on here then people can comment on whether you are getting a good deal.
