Amex will check up on you, not sure about the other lenders. My employer joked that Scottish Widows (mortgage) wanted to know less than Amex ;-) Nice to see responsible lending.

When you sign your application, you certify that all details you have provided are true to the best of your knowledge.... one thing I have always maintained is that you DO NOT sign on a document without agreeing to each and every statement made on that document.

Don't mean to sound pedantic, but one should try and attach value to one's own signature as a general rule... you may lose out on itsy-bitsies but stands you in good stead in the long run...

  • I had a wager with a friend that the Bank Of England Base Rate would be greater than 5% by the end of 2004 - unfortunately (or fortunately!!), I was wrong. :(

I don't think that my credit card company checked this though.

If you're unemployed you're unemployed, and claiming otherwise would technically be fraud.

If you work contracts, then the fact that you're between them at a given time doesn't alter the fact that your typical annual earnings are £XX,XXX.

There you go... one would do well to hedge one's bets (wagers) while filling in a credit card application ;)

I would agree that claiming you earn more than you actually do is not wise.

I don't know if they actually check with your employer. The only time I know my employer was contacted was for my mortgage. The employer replied with a standard letter confirming my salary and stating I wasn't under threat of redundancy! (I then was about 9 months later!!)

However applications only ask for one employer. I have a second, part-time job (pays about £3K) & I declare my combined income on applications. If they checked my income with my main employer, they would think I was 'exagerating the truth'...
  • My next wager will be on the Grand National in April, I'll make sure to let Barclaycard know.

You should not commit fraud because it is a criminal offence.
