I saw these in the packaging in the shop and they show a load of logos but don't mention DivX/Xvid (which is a common compression standard used in downloaded movies for example). I think they claim to read Nero's standard, but that's not the standard, DivX is.

I compress my own DVDs this way to store as I find convenient. This is technically illegal, as even if you own the original, UK law doesn't seem to have evolved a 'fair use' doctrine...

    I have a Toshiba DivX/Xvid-compatible DVD player.
It cost £30+PnP, is good quality and reads most discs (use quality ones, people, it's not expensive).

    For example:

  • I bought 2 of these for my grandchildren for Christmas, paid £32 each for them in Lidl and they have both broken down and I am going to take them back and ask for a refund. They are not a bargain if they only last 6 months.

Sorry to hear that - I bought mine at the same time and it's still going strong.

You might struggle getting a refund out of Lidl (indeed anywhere) after 6 months use, but at least this player has a 3 year warranty - there should have been a helpline number in the manual. I've had a quick look round but I can't find mine. PM me if you can't find yours (and Lidl won't help) - I'll have another look (it might even be on a sticker on the bottom of the player). Ofcourse the warranty will only cover manufacturing faults, not any kind of misuse.

    Good luck.

    :)

EDIT: BTW Skeen - it does play DivX and Xvid encoded movies, both off disc and USB, but it won't do mkv or HD avi (h.264 encoded files).

EDIT2: BTW Hardboard - my wife polishes my halo in return for waxing her back.

  • Thanks for your reply to my post. I phoned Lidl Customer Services and they said I could take them back if I had the receipt, which I do. Unfortunately my grandchildren live 60 miles away so the problem now is finding time to go and get them.

Wow, that's excellent! They've gone up in my estimation then!

I remember a couple of years ago having heck of a job returning a remote control - I had the receipt, but the girl on the checkout refused to have it back because it wasn't faulty, it just didn't have the right code to work the telly I had at the time!

Eventually the manager came out and begrudgingly gave me my money back, explaining they only take back faulty goods, and he was doing me the biggest favour in the world!

It took me a long time to even consider them for electricals again.

    Well done you.

  • These seem to have sold out everywhere by me. Does anyone know a similarly cheap alternative? Must have USB socket, HDMI upscaling and Can plug an external hard drive into.

    Like an xbox360 but cheaper!

Most retailers will exchange or refund under 12 months but only if faulty. They are not obliged to do anything if it's not faulty. Having said that, if it's over 6 months old, they are not obliged to refund either.
  • I picked one up today, bargain at that price. You can't buy a HDML lead for that money. Anyone interested Cheadle branch have a couple left, you have to ask - they are in the back!

what is a hdml lead:confused:, if you mean hdmi lead, take a look at this one, a lot less than £19, unless you are one of these that believe you have to spend £60 on a lead to get a decent picture:rolleyes:

Got one yesterday at the lidl in sunny govan, although as a previous poster has said, you have to ask... (i thought the manager was joking when he said they were all in his office because they were being nicked, although quite what the resell value of a £20 dvd player is i don't know...). All seems well, played some avi's on it from a usb stick (8gb mind, box says it only supports up to 4gb...), but it wouldn't recognise any mp4's... Oh, and if you have a mac, the usb needs to formatted for ms-dos...
