    Also check to see if the tyres are "matched" different tread patterns can produce weird vibrations at odd speeds. Often people mix and match odd tyres to get the best legal wear but in reality you need decent tyres to stop your car when braking (but thats another topic!)

    Bear in mind the tyre could be faulty and still correctly balanced.

    It should be the wheel & tyre assembly that they balance, not just the wheel.

    It is true that on very rare occassions it is possible to have a tyre so badly manufactured that it is impossible to balance the wheel & tyre assembly correctly, but such imbalance would still show on the balancing machine.

    Thanks to everyone for your replies. I took my car into Evans Halshaw today and they fixed it in 20mins, took it for a spin to make sure it was done and didn't charge me for it. Hurrah!
