Quad core

Buying a computer through your company is certainly a lot cheaper than buying it from personal income that has been taxed but at the end of the day it still costs you money. Top end machines come at a price premium so it makes sense to avoid them unless actually needed and it sounds like you don't need one if you are only just replacing a four year old machine.Well it`s a tax right off and I tend to change my puter about every 4 years. Thought it might have a bit of future proofing there. It`s used for everything. Business, games and also shortly as a music recording studio. Massive hard drive, lots of memory.
Using my old version of XP but if seven is any good will possibly go with that. I didn`t want a larger screen. Anyway it seems to do the job quite well .0 -

There is truth in this post, but also a lack of other truth's
A Quad isn't worthless if you play games. A Quad isn't worthless if you are a developer. A Quad isn't worthless if you run a virtual server host with multiple VM's.
Essentially, a Quad is worthless if:
a) You don't know what it is
b) You don't know how to benefit from its maximum potential
In this case, the OP could have saved some money it seems

That's because converting to DVD is a lot less CPU-intensive than converting to h.264.
You must have a very fast DVD writer though.

If you are planning on using it for cubase with other programs rewired through and some plug ins and VST's running at the same time, I suspect you will see the benefits.0 -

ah..I forgot that step
..but converting from avi to the files ready to burn to dvd is about 10 mins....all 4 cores working their little socks off

A quadcore is worthless unless you know that having only one is going to be a disadvantage.0 -

Where do you buy core socks? :rotfl:Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Yes, I fully intend to use the machine for composing/ recording and I have a number of retro midi keyboards that I will be using . I fully intend to use a number of plugins plus a master keyboard as a controller so I may well be USB`d up to the eyeballs. Like I say, I am also thinking about future proofing.0

Enjoy and let us know what you think after you've had a go at music production on it!
Best piece of hardware imo for music production if you haven't got one already is a second monitor! Amazing how much quicker you can get stuff done with all the VST's on their own screen!0
