My OH worked unpaid (he never drew a wage) for a Ltd company for years, owned by his now ex wifes parents. Her parents said 3 years ago that he could have the company and he was told everything had been signed over to him.
In the last year the company has struggled financially and while going through the books and paperwork we found out that my OH has never owned the company at all and all shares are still in ex in laws names, although my OH was a company director.
The company owed some rent on business premises (which we had been paying out of our own pockets initially) so he has resigned as director and no longer has anything to do with the company or stock.
Trouble is that the company who own the business premises are now trying to make my OH pay the rent that is owed, he did sign the rental agreement on behalf of the company but surely he's not totally responsible? The company has various machines and stock that are classed as assets (also a laptop) which were all left behind when he resigned. What can we do?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance
