Loan Fees

Please help my husband had a loan for a computer when I first met him which he paid for by direct debit. he was going through a divorce and finances were up and down and two payments were 3 days late. He received letters (after they had received the payments) saying the direct debit was unpaid and was charged £40 a go. He contacted them and said he would not pay these late fees. We have heard nothing for 5 years and are now reciving wuite abusive calls from a debt collection agency and we ahve received two threatenign letters. WE do not wish to pay this and have told them so and expalined why we would not pay as we think the fees are unfair. They are threatening us with court action now and our credit file showsx this £80 as default which we are very upset about as have no other blips on our file. Do we have to pay this? IS there a way we can dispute their fees?
