Travelex

I'm about to spend a couple of thousand pounds on canadian dollar travellers cheques to be picked up at Glasgow airport when I leave there in a couple of weeks.

Any horror stories, recommendations or moneysaving tips before I give travelex my money?

If you buy on any sort of credit card, or a VISA debit card, you will be charged a cash advance fee. This is lowest from Nationwide, but still more than nothing.

The only way to avoid a fee IIRC is to pay using a switch card if you have one (and I don't).

Notwithstanding the above, Travelex's charges + Nationwide's cash advance fee are still better than any other foreign exchange rates I've found in the UK and I always use them.

Picked up from the Glasgow Airport branch in September and it was fine, no problems at all. It's better to pre order, I did it online and there is no commission charges (ok I know it's built into the price) but if you turn up at branch on the day and change money there is an additional commision charge to pay.
  • Cheers for the replies, didn't know about the Visa debit card charge. Have now investigated that and found out it will be a maximum of £4.50.

Will see if I can pay by cheque when I collect them, if not I guess I will have to pay my £4.50 :o

From my experience, Travelex rates are just about THE best in the UK, especially if you order first online, even considering that their commission is built into the rate.

You will always get a better rate in your destination however!

  • Totally agree - looked at many sites before deciding which one to use and Travelex came out the best for rates. Again order online in advance. Cant fault them.

  • Used Travelex before, but when I ordered euros a couple of weeks ago I found the site would not accept a switch card, checked with my bank, they said it was a problem at Travelex, but couldn't get it to accept after many attempts.
As I needed the currency for collection at airport in two days I had to use credit card, which it accepted immediately - but got hit with two charges by the card, one for for 'cash withdrawal'. Would have been as cheap using my local Bank of Scotland!

You can't pay on collection, or you aren't eligible for the web exchange rates (which are better) or the nil commission deal.
