Smile stopped giving out prepaid envelopes years ago!0

I've just opened a First Direct account and have a cheque to pay in. Can someone tell me the address to send it to? Do you have to do anything else such as writing your account number on the back, etc?0

Send your cheque to:
First Direct, 40 Wakefield Rd, Leeds, LS98 1FD
Send it with a paying in slip (from your paying in book or use one from your cheque book, and write your account number and name and address on the back of the cheque. If you will the end, you must will the means.0 -
I post cheques away to FD quite a bit, so I'm not best pleased at this. I'm surprised by it - it's not like them. Credit crunch must be biting!
Just go into any HSBC branch and use a paying-in machine or pay-in at a counter. Or you can send to the address I've given to another poster above.
If we want free banking the banks are going to have to cut their costs. They're not doing so well at the moment are they?If you will the end, you must will the means.0 -

Only problem is I don't have a cheque book and didn't ask for one as I can't remember the last time I wrote a cheque. The nearest HSBC branch is over 30 miles away so that isn't practical.0 -
I have within the last two weeks phoned them up and been sent the free prepaid envelopes. I live in a small villiage where posting cheques is really the only option. So maybe if you phone they will send them?Enough money to live on so retired early...planning to see where life takes me:D0

I'm sure if you make sure your account number, sort code and name and address is written on the back you'll be ok. Just give them a quick ring to check. They could always send you a book of paying in slips quickly if you're not in any rush to pay the cheque in. You can order it through internet banking or phone them - they're very helpful. If you will the end, you must will the means.0 -

The option to order them is still there when logged into online banking.
Or are you saying the envelopes they supply no longer have a preprinted freepost address?0 -
Yes they still supply free envelopes but they are now just printed with the address and a 'affix stamp here' box instead of the old first class prepaid thingy0
