Student son on car insurance

My 19 year old son has been driving on a full licence for 2 years, accident free. I drive an N reg Citroen AX (I have 5yrs NCD) and he drives it as well. last June I insured it with Direct Line (£580) with their policy which allows young named drivers build up a No Claim Discount. Since then he has gone to University and only uses the car during the holidays when he comes home. The renewal docs have come thru and they want £590, more than the car is worth. I have followed MSE advice and got a quotes from Confused, etc. for myself only (£106 cheapest) and with him as a named driver (£605). Does anyone know of anyone who would insure him on a short term basis at a lower cost?
Thanks

We are in a similar situation, and have found that it is fairly reasonable to insure DD to drive my car as and when we need it. eg we might call Direct Line and ask for her to be on my insurance for a fortnight. It is probably not cheaper per day than a years worth, but at least you will only be paying for what you are using.0

But I imagine the named driver won't be building up the named driver discount. It is probably not cheaper per day than a years worth, but at least you will only be paying for what you are using.
Just add him on for the whole year and let him build up the discount. That is the thing you're buying in this instance.0 -
With my DD we insured for the year with Direct Line and then suspended it when she was at uni, that way we got the money back for when she wasn't using it and still built up the NCD.Sell £1500

Your son would not have any no claims bonus with another company I'm sure. He would only get to use his named driver NCB against a direct line policy so can it really be cheaper with someone else?0
