Animated avatars work, but you must get the dimensions and file size correct for MSE before you upload via your profile.
Currently..... "The maximum size of your custom image is 80 by 80 pixels or 14.9 KB (whichever is smaller)."
If the avatar is larger than 80 by 80 pixels, then the forum software will resize it for you. The problem with that is that it will only use the first frame of the animation, so you will end up with a static avatar.
If you don't have the software to re-size an animated gif then you can do it here:

Also just noticed that if you "right-click" on your avatar and select "save as" then the avatar file is called cat.jpg.
An animated avatar needs to be in .gif format. jpg's are static.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB
