Road tax for car just purchased

I purchased a car recently from a friend who was going to look out the registration document to send to me, but now he can't find it. Problem is, the tax runs out tonight and I cannot get new tax if I don't have the document.

Does anybody know if there is a suitable form for change of ownership and for getting tax that I can pick up from the Post Office tomorrow?

TIA

I have insurance but I don't have any of the reg doc as he couldn't find it. All I have is the slip the seller was given when he bought the vehicle.

If you are not the registered keeper and do not have the V5 or V11 you cannot tax it.

If you’re not shown as the registered keeper on DVLA records you cannot tax the vehicle. You’ll need to apply for a Registration Certificate in your name. To get one, fill in form V62 ‘Application for a Vehicle Registration Certificate’ and post to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1DD. You may have to wait up to four weeks for a new certificate to arrive. In the meantime, you should keep your vehicle off the road.

    Download V62 here

Use a V62 (from PO or download from above) and tax it. Won't get stopped by a Police ANPR car cos:

    a) It's taxed
    b) It's insured
    c) It's MOT'd

Just get your friend to give you a reicept of some sort that is dated today and keep your insurance with you incase you do get stopped for some random reason.

I have insurance but I don't have any of the reg doc as he couldn't find it. All I have is the slip the seller was given when he bought the vehicle.

Is the green slip he gave you blank? or does it have his details on it?

If it's blank then you can put your details on it and use to tax at Post Office tomorrow with your insurance and mot.

If it's not blank then you'll need to ring DVLA first thing (they open at 8am) on 0870 240 0010 to see if there is a registered keeper for the vehicle. If there is NOT a registered keeper on the record then you can tax at a local DVLA office (not Post Office) and apply to become registered keeper using form V62.

If there is a registered keeper then I'm afraid you cannot tax it til you receive the V5C logbook after applying yourself. This will take 3-6 weeks as there are security checks to be done, so it will need to be kept off road. To become keeper you will need to send V62 form (from PO or www.direct.gov.uk/motoring) with the green slip and it will be free.

If your friend is the registered keeper (they will have to ask DVLA themselves) then he can order new V5C over phone for £25 if his details are correct. He will get this in 5 working days, and can then pass you green slip so you can tax, and then send off rest to update you as keeper.

That does help thanks, though it's not good news. The slip has his details on and he used it to tax the car 6 months ago when he bought it. I have checked on the DVLA site and the last V5 was issued in 2007, so it looks like the person he bought the car from failed to send the form off or it was lost.

It's looking like I will have to keep the car off the road till this is sorted, am I able to SORN it if it's not registered in my name?

Sorry it's not good news. I would still advise that you ring DVLA tomorrow to check if there is a registered keeper, as if your friend didn't get a logbook to it may be blank and therefore you can tax it. longshot but may be worth it!

Yes you can SORN it. Send off form V890 to SORN it, from PO or website, same time you send V62 and green slip (this can be used to get free V5C even though it has his name on it). Then when you get logbook back and tax it this will cancel SORN automatically.

Is your friend the registered keeper?

Why not buy the tax online? If the MOT and insurance are valid then you can have the tax sent to your friend and he/she can give the disc to you
