Not sure what to do...

Hi
I rarely post on this forum so apologies if this in the wrong place.

Just not sure what to do...

I noticed on Thursday evening after I got home from work, about 6.30pm, a fox running around. I didn't think much of it since evenings are getting longer and I live in an urban area and do see foxes around here, so not necessarily unusual.

However, yesterday a fox appeared in my garden and I'm assuming it's the same fox that I saw on Thursday. The thing that concerns me is that it appeared at about 3pm yesterday and hung around in the garden for ages. It also appeared about an hour ago today but my cats made sure it didn't hang around!

I'm not worried about my cats, but did manage to get reasonably close to the fox - it didn't look unwell and seemed quite friendly as it had water from a bowl that I leave on the patio and the door was open and he looked ready to wander in...

I'm tempted to ring the RSPCA or my local rescue place as I'm sure that a fox shouldn't be out this early during the day and be this friendly...

Meant to add, saw it in a neigbours' garden yesterday also and they have dogs.

Just not sure what to do...?

If it's healthy you don't need to do anything, in my opinion. Foxes can be very bold if they've become used to seeing and being around humans. I just wouldn't encourage them, myself

    Thanks for that.

I'm inclined just to leave it as it is for the moment...don't want to encourage it but can't get close enough to see if it has a problem...just seems strange to see it out during the day.

My cats have hissy fits at it but it doesn't seem to be bothered

If you are worried, it does no harm to get in touch with the rspca or a local wildlife rescue if you have one. They are the best people to advise you, but as B&T said it's probably just very brave!

Could just be curious, or appreciate the water bowl and be staying close to it in this hot weather.

Where I used to live was very, very urban, even for London, it was surrounded by main roads and so on but there was a reasonable sized garden with lots of bushes and foxes lived in there. A vixen cubbed there most years.

The foxes often ran about in broad daylight, it was great to watch the cubs playing on the grass.

As long as it doesn't look ill I wouldn't worry too much.
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

If it is in any distress at all, I would be on the phone to a local wildlife charity/hospital etc ... if it's got something wrong with its eye that is catching, you don't want your cats to catch it if they go near the fox to defend their territory!!

Poor thing ... have never seen a fox "live" myself but I do remember reading that they are getting very brave and will happily wander round towns and streets during the daytime in search of food.

Are you feeding the hegehogs? Maybe Mr or Mrs Fox is coming for hedgehog food?

Now you know there is something wrong with it though, I would definitely be on the blower to someone to get it help.

I reckon a wildlife charity would be happier to come out quicker than the RSPCA ... *L* .. unless you tell em there's a film crew at yours ...

    Naughty me ... !

I see foxes often in the daytime although more at night and I live in a built up area. Some are becoming more brazen so I wouldn't encourage it. I had one recently that was on the opposite side of the road from me just outside my house. When it saw me walking my dog it started to cross over to us instead of going the other way. I went home very quickly alarmed.

Don't bother calling the RSPCA, they won't come out for wild animals. I'm not altogether impressed with a lot of what they do for domesticated ones either
