Natwest card payments.

Just opened a natwest card for the 0% for 9 months BT offer (£49 fee but the BT was not eligible for the best no-fee cards at the mo because it was already on a HBoS card).

They don't give details of a bank account to pay into for online payments (they don't accept debit card payments so the only way they can be paid is either in a branch, by post with a cheque or online via their own current account).

Before I call and try to get this info out of them does anyone know the details so I can set up an online payment with my own banks bill payment system?

Cheers,
G

You could try looking under 'pay someone new' or its equivalent under your current account payments. Nationwide's Flex account for instance allows you to set up a payment to credit cards as an option just using the 16 figures on the card. I paid my Natwest card this way. I always send £1 as soon as I get a new credit card just to check everything is OK.

I don't have the details, but it may be worth experimenting with your bank's online payment thingy, mine (Smile) lets you choose the type of bill, then the company, and then set it up that way.

  • Thanks both.

I've looked at my banks (first direct) bill payment system already and there is an entry for natwest visa there but when setting it up it asks for a card number that begins with different digits than the one I have so am a bit nervous about using that one. Still, will probably give natwest a call and see if I can tease the details out of them.

As it happens, I also queried NatWest cards about this issue on Friday 24 March. I drew the same preliminary conclusions as the OP did. Upon speaking to them, they confirmed that the only "automatic" way to pay them is via a direct debit (to pay off the minimum payment amount). Some months ago, they said they would send me the DD forms in the post but none arrived. The guy I spoke to on Friday said he would send them again. So I wait and see! During my telcon with NatWest, I did point out to them that other cards accept electronic transfers from non-issuer bank current accounts and this really helps me to pay off my cards on time. The guy I spoke to understood that but it seemed that NatWest itself, for reasons best known to themselves, would rather not provide this facility.

Per other posters' suggestions, I am gonna check out my current account's payment function and see if there is any pre-set up popular payees available.

If the site allows, try using your card's 16 numbers anyway. I've had similar problems with other current accounts and it has always worked. Send only £1 on this but pay off your first minimum payment by cheque for the full amount. Your £1 payment will show on your first statement if successful and you can use the link with confidence for all other subsequent payments. It it doesn't work, your £1 should appear back in your Natwest after some days stuck in limbo!
