Selling university text books

Hi
After a little bit of advice here.
I have read the selling books on amazon thread but still am undecided what to do.
I have a lot of text books (4 years of engineering degree study) and would like to off load them, make space and if i'm lucky gain some money back (we are money saving after all).
What would be the best way of doing this, ebay, amazon or any other suggestions greatfully recieved?
Advantages/ disadvantages please, i already have an ebay account but not amazon
Thanks for your help and time reading

The advantage of Amazon is that you can see exactly what your end price will be before you decide to sell, and that includes the postal credit. You also do not pay to list so can keep the books on there for ages.
The disadvantages are the fees can be steep and the postal credit insufficient to cover the actual costs..so check all that before you list.

On ebay assuming you have a start price of over 99p you will have to pay to list the book, and you have postage capped at £2.75 so may have to load your item cost to cover any additional postage if book is heavy. You must also offer paypal as a payment method and that incurs more fees.

You might also want to check out Greenmetropolis you can add additional postage costs for a heavy book but the disadvantage is that stuff can take quite a while to sell.

In the first instance I would check out completed listings on ebay and also current price and sales ranking on Amazon before making any decisions. You might also want to check out if there are any later editions to your books as that can kill their price quite easily.

Most university bookshops have a 2nd hand section. Of course the price they buy in at may be low :(

TBH, I'd go for Amazon rather than Ebay.

Wait until the start of the new session and put a notice up on the student board in the University with your phone number. Will probably be able to get half the new cost with no commission postage charges etc.
  • Would it not be best to wait until August/September before listing them for sale?

If your local uni offers the same courses then post a flyer up on the department noticeboard, you'll soon sell them that way.

I'd get ahead of the game and start trying to sell now, many students prefer to get a book reading list before they start and you might pick up an eager student buyer.

Thanks for all the advice, i have looked into the options and ended up listing on Amazon.
Just need one more piece of advice please, when i use the ISBn number of a particular book it brings up the wrong edition of a the book, i can find the right edition by searching, but then the picture and details dont match the number. Not sure what to do here, i dont want to risk a complaint because it isnt what it says it is.

I sold my sons' books on amazon and also some from their friends. Better to list them before the term starts next year as loads get sold during the summer time when they have time to browse Amazon for their next year's books.Remember if they are heavy books that you only get £2.75 for postage allowance and amazon takes a cut of that too. So be careful to list them at a price that you will make money not loose it. Also add into the listing if it has any notes etc written in as these sell better. I am selling off loads of Maths books ( retired maths teacher ) and the ones with all the notes and answers go before a brand new book.
