Why does laptop think cd is blank?

My daughter has a Toshiba laptop - intel celeron with Windows vista basic. It has been running really slowly and so we put the recovery disk in and wiped it. It is up and running again but there are a couple of disks with programs on that I have tried to install and it just sees them as blank disks. (One of them is Adobe photoshop elements) When I put them in my own pc (Dell Studio) it recognises them and I could install the programs if I wanted.

Why won't her laptop read the cd's? Is there anything I can do about it? I have an external hard drive that I could copy the contents of the disks onto and then plug into her laptop (although I don't know if this is possible with the photoshop).

Maybe im wrong but intel celeron is a single processor and not a dual core as maybe thats the reason why the laptop is slow in running vista, how much does the laptop have, as for the drive not reading the cds i cant answer

i would say the same thing

i would bail the vista boot asap as its sinking fast if not already sunk

i mean, even the release candidate of windows 7 has yielded me less problems than the stable vista sp1(i say stable but come-on)

    or even xp

but i would say window 7 as its stable enough

    runs faster than vista

easier for users who only know windows than ubuntu and stuff

and best of all its really good!

just an idea seeing as your only on vista basic..... all be it a bit off topic
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

Im not sure of your knowledge level here so forgive me if this seems i tad saft.
But by "blank" are you saying that when you put the disk in it doesn't come up on screen automatically? ie it does not autorun?

If so, it's a completely different issue.
Browse to my computer "explore" the CD and find the file called "setup.exe" (or similar) that should do what you want.

Older pc's had cd players - are you running a DVD disc?
Is the cd dirty? Is the lens dirty?
Is this a disc you created yourself- try a different brand- they are not all the same. Did you burn at the max speed, try a x4 speed write speed instead.
If your pc's are on your network then "share" your main CD/DVD player, then use "Map a Drive" this will allow you to see the main drive on the laptop and install that way.

Just to clarify. She has a 2 year old laptop and it has a cd/dvd writer. When I put these discs in I get a window appear telling me that it is a blank cd and giving me options about burning the cd etc.

Ive tried using the original disc and have also used my pc to copy it onto a different brand of cd and her laptop still thinks the new cd is blank. Im going to try and copy it to a dvd disc and see if her laptop will recognise it then.
