DVD Recorder problem

Hi,
Haven't posted before, so i apologise if i am all wrong. The problem is, i have a DVD recorder that has just stopped working, i only used it to transfer video tapes and holiday tapes, midway through putting a holiday tape from a camera to DVD, the recorder just stopped, as if the plug had been pulled, changed the fuse, even tried a different cable, but no sign of life, can't really afford a new one at the moment, didn't know if any electrical minds out there may have an idea. I have seen those Grabbit cable gadgets, to transfer stuff to the pc to put on disc, has anyone any advice on those things please. Really grateful for any advice.
