The answerphone (when I rang a couple of hours ago) said they closed at 2pm.
Also - and by the way, thanks for looking this up, I do appreciate it - I would interpret that £20 admin fee to be applicable if I took out the policy and then decided to cancel within 14 days (the statutory cooling off period). This is actually a renewal, so we've been with them for a year already and the new policy is due to start on Monday. We've simply decided not to renew so I don't think they can charge a fee.0 -
Barclays will allow you to cancel same day - if you do it before 6pm, the payment will be available for re-call and recredit to your account. What would William Shatner do?0

It IS a Barclays bank account. The man on the phone told me it had to be cancelled one working day in advance, but to be honest I don't think he knew what he was looking at/talking about. In fact at one point he started talking about a direct debit I had cancelled on a DIFFERENT Barclays account! Not impressed with the helpline at all.
So, if I call in to my local branch on Monday will they be able to stop the money being sent?0 -

Yes, you can. Bear in mind that telephone banking might use different software to our branches.
You can even tell them how to do it: cancel the Direct Debit as normal, and then it will display a prompt that the Direct Debit is available for recall/return. Select that option, choose the Direct Debit and apply. Set manual unpaids fee from 1 to 0 and apply.
Don't take no for an answer from a branch, if you're canceling on the same day as the debit. What would William Shatner do?0 -
Is there likely to be a problem because I have already cancelled the direct debit online? I spoke to telephone banking and she said on her system it showed as cancelled, but she could still see the payment due to go out on Monday. She was lovely but couldn't help. She said she would have to transfer me to online banking - that's when I got the man who wasn't very helpful at all.
So, since I've already cancelled it online, the bank can't cancel it themselves, can they? Can they still stop the money from leaving the account?0 -
Whatever happens with the bank, make sure you still phone the insurance company on Monday - otherwise they might send you a bill for the time you are on cover before they process your letter.0

Recall/return is separate to canceling the DDR, so provided that the posting date is Monday - i.e. it shows as 01/06/2009 - the branch can still recall it.What would William Shatner do?0 -
Barclaycall can reverse that transcation so I'd get back on the phone.0
