Dvd drive not working?

I bought a laptop of ebay, I received today to find the DVD drive doesn't work, Its got lights on it, spins up when you put a disc in, but its not detected by either BIOS or Windows. What would be the problem here? I am curious as when I turned it on it was like buying a brand new laptop, they had done a fresh install of windows and I had to go through the setup process, anyone any ideas? Its a Dell inspiron 6400

    Some Dell laptop have issues. Best to contact Dell support.My friend got one recently and it never booted up. Had to send it back
