Have a new Dell Laptop with Vista pre-installed. Downloaded and installed Avast Anti Virus (Avast Home Edition - Free 4.8.1335.90414).
Now Contol Panel won't show any options and keeps showing as 'Not Responding'.
Is there a cure or a simple solution to resolve this?

It has taken about 4,500,000,000 (4.5 billion) years for the Earth to form as it is now .........
and it'll only take about another 100 years for mankind to really **** it up!!!!

Most new vista machines come with Mcafee or Norton pre installed. Did you remove the 'trial' first?:idea:0

Use the MCAFEE REMOVAL TOOL (Simply uninstalling still leaves bits behind/running)
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507
Uninstall Avast
Download CCLEANER (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION' ~ make sure YAHOO TOOLBAR is unticked on installation)
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Run the CLEANER scan (UNTICK 'cookies')
Then run the REGISTRY scan (Backup the registry when it asks)
Reinstall Avast:idea:0
