right click the Folder on the Xp machine and turn on "sharing" , it's share this folder on the netwrok....
then it should appear on the Vista machine and you will be able to copy the filesEx forum ambassador

In case it doesn't show, go to the Command prompt, get your xp boxes IP address (192.168.x.x or similar) and type it into the explorer address bar like such \\192.168.x.x0

On the Vista laptop Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\Windows Easy Transfer might help you as well.0

If one of them is windows XP pro, you might run into problems with password requests to view shared folders between say XP home and XP pro. (password box won't accept a blank password).
In which case I normally end up having to give the Guest account a password on the pro machine as the quickest simple solution.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

alternatively you may still be able to buy a usb wire that does the job at the click of a button without the need to be fully networked up. The one i have sat here cost around a tenner in 2003, although i've not used it since. not sure theres even a demand for them nowadays though!0

Or simpler still, burn 1 or more CD/DVD (depends on size of data of course) anc copy them into the laptop. This also gives you a snap shot physical backup too.Do you want a General Election Now? Sign here -> http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/please-go/

Having recently got myself a new laptop with Vista and doing exactly as you are now I did wonder about issues erupting connecting Vista to XP, however when I went into "Start menu -> Network" you should notice that your Desktop is listed there as the router sets a semi-network, simply move your files into the shared docs folder on XP and you can transfer them straight out onto your laptop from there.Laptop: Asus X58L; 2Ghz Celeron M575; 1Gb RAM; Intel X3100 Graphic chip set; 120Gb Hitatchi HTS542512K; 15.4" Widescreen.
