    Generally yes

BUT there are some cases of some routers not supporting multiple xbox live connections. ps3 may have a similar problem as well.
but most routers seem to work fine.

i dont play wirelessly so i would be connecting to the modem with an ethernet cable. the thing that made me unsure was that i thought the console saved connection details like isp address's and of course my friends will have different isp address's. i also thought there could be a security feature to stop thieves from playing online with consoles they have pinched.

Nope. If you were to move house or change ISPs, you would still be able to play online.

as long as the ps3 (and i'm guessing the same for the 360) are connected to a router and both are set to receive IP addresses via DHCP then there shouldnt be a problem as the router holds the connection details for the ISP

does that mean connecting directly to the modem would not work?

not without setting the consoles up again for the new connection.

the question is would the console detect that it is connected to a different internet connection and give me on screen messages to follow or would i need to go equipped with the instruction booklet, not that they are any help.
