Screwfix are brilliant for basic commodities, such as screws, sealants etc. Keen prices and quite exceptional delivery.

But I wouldn't touch them for a higher powered extractor fan. You will get the sort of power / quality you can get at B&Q.

Wall / window mounted tend to look messy. And you need to get the grille as high as possible in order to vent the warm / wet air that goes up to ceiling level and condenses if not shifted quickly. That's when the mould starts to appear!

If you can get one up in the loft it's a lot tidier and it's relatively easy to get at the motor to clean it (astonishing how much dust the good ones suck in - and as the extracted air is damp, the dust tends to congeal in the extractor tube and on the rotor tips. But takes 5 mins every few months to do a basic clean)

The in-line ones are best. You need something that changes the air in the room fully at least 9 times / hour. And one with a timer is best. Wire it into the light circuit in order it comes on automatically - and set it to run on at least 20 mins after the switch is killed.

But not cheap. A decent one with all the bits of intake / exhaust / tubes will cost just under £100. But they are good. I've got one above a shower cubicle and there is never a trace of steam in the bathroom - even after a longish shower. If you've got a separate cubicle - would recommend the air vent with the optional low voltage halogen in it. But be warned - these motors are not small. Need mounting across the joists on something like floorboard thickness - and on a small sheet of foam to kill any vibration. But they do the job well. A bath will put some steam into the room 'cos of the wider surface area - but the 20min overrun on the fan will sort that out and leave the room dry.

Try this link - but make sure you can get the extract pipe to the outside! Well worth the effort if you can :

The models with a 'T' following have the timer. If you go this route - check you mount the motor with the arrow pointing outside! Otherwise you will get a hell of a blow job. Just had to reverse my water meter after the experts fitted it upside down - so it can be done.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
  • The answer to your question is in one of my previous posts. The xpelair one mentioned is quiet yet powerful. Good Luck!

    Cash ISA rate 6.5% fixed for 2 years. Mortgage rate 0.75% = 5.75% profit on £75K = £4500 per year:j
