I've just spent the whole day trying to delete the old files from the server and upload the new ones. The new ones didn't work (
) so I've ended up putting the old ones back up (at leastthat worked)! I'm getting very frustrated! I had no problem when I first put the old ones on.

What problem were you getting with your new version?
You can leave old files on your server if they're not linked to the new ones. It's just that the old files can still be referenced directly but won't be linked to your home (index) page. If the new index name is the same as the old one, it will just be overwritten when you FTP the files onto your server. Its just the same as copying files on your PC. If the file name exists, the copy will over write it.
Anyway, back to my original question, what problem were you getting with your new version?0 -
When I put the url in the address bar it comes up with a page on my server (telewest blueyonder) saying the page can't be found so I assume there must be somethng wrong with my index page? Anyway, I might try it leaving the old files on in the morning. My eyes can't focus anymore tonight! Thanks for your reply.0

If you delete one of the old files and then attempt to go to the URL is it displaying or not?
Sounds like you may not be in the correct folder on the serverAll posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

After deleting the old file and adding the new one, did you press "refresh" (PF5) on your PC before trying to view the new page? It might be a cache issue. Otherwise, did you install the new file in the correct folder on the server?0

I've just tried deleting one of the old files and wasn't able to view it then uploaded it again and it is there again (is that what you meant?). The old files appear to have gone into the same folder as the new ones were put. I definitely didn't change the directory when I uploaded them.
Flexible Friend, yes I did refresh.
I think I will try again this morning  One thing I did notice was that when I deleted the old files from the server some of them were still there with a message having come up Permission Denied - you are not allowed to perform this task. Also, I tried resetting my web pages on the Blue Yonder Selfcare page (ie deleting the files) but the aforementioned ones were still there. This is getting very complicated - I hope you understand all this! Thanks very much for your responses, I'm sure I'll get there in the end.

"Permission denied" - that means you need to grant yourself write/delete/update access to those files or to the whole directory. Do you know how to CHMOD a file on the server? Set the file or folder contents to 755. If that doesn't work, try 777.
The files are "read only" at the moment.
You can CHMOD or change the file permissions via your FTP tool. Select the file/directory, right click and in properties you will be able to change the permissions.
If in doubt, contact your web host to do it for you.0 -

Yes that is what I meant... have to eliminate the obvious problems first (and the stupid mistakes I have made myself too many times)
can you post the URL of one of your old and new pages? I dont know if this is against forum rules as it isnt self promotion but if you want to be on the safe side you have PM them to me.All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers
